Learn From Ants O Sluggard!

7th September 2007

Don't those little tiny creatures I'm sure you've squashed many a time without thinking just get you wondering? I'm talking about ants. What do ants have to do with money? The answer is quite a lot actually. The biblical verse Proverbs 6, verses 6 - 8 tell you to learn from the ants o sluggard! The verse mentions something which is fact. Ants do not have a leader directing them on what to do yet they are very organized and work diligently to gather for their store. They have a queen but she's not a very "involved" queen. The queen ant reminds me of shareholders of a company, they do the least work if you really compare it to what the people underneath them do.

Finance Tid Bits Look at it this way. Ants don't have brains but human beings do. Now let's see why the great book would tell us to learn from ants. Firstly, ants know that the seasons change and there will come a time when they have to survive on what they have gathered. They spend all summer long gathering and storing food. This can be thought of as savings for us in terms of money. When the winter comes, the ants survive on what they have gathered during the summer and it's always enough to tide them through the winter. Now in human terms. Think of the summer as the times when you have extra cash coming in from bonuses, travel days, leave payouts etc. This is when you should be hiding that extra cash in emergency funds or other investments, as long as you are saving the money and not spending it. When the winter time comes which could be an unexpected debt or medical expense you will have enough money saved to pay for it without having to use credit cards and incur further debt.

We know that the only thing constant in the world is change. We are aware because just before summer season we go shopping for summer clothes. Before the winter we make sure the heat is working, we have ample warm winter clothing etc. It is beyond me why we do not practice the same diligence when it comes to our finances and handling our money. So there is a lesson to be learnt from the ants. Change is a sure thing and it is constant, do not be caught unaware, start saving money today and avoid being thrown off balance by unexpected debt because as sure as the summer comes, unexpected debt will come too.

Rita Says: Can we really be outdone by a little creature with no brain? | 07.10.2007 |

Geneva Says: Yes Rita, its a no brainer! It is quite obvious that we should save but like the article so rightly states that we don't and I guess its that thing of I'll do it tomorrow but tomorrow never comes | 07.10.2007 |

Visto Says: I agree very much with your last sentence Geneva tomorrow never comes. I've been saving tomorrow for over a year now! Shameful. | 07.10.2007 |
